Sealing drive resumed

Over 100 illegal commercial properties targeted

NEW DELHI: After a four-day gap, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi resumed its sealing drive on Wednesday targeting over 100 illegal commercial properties in the city, including two multi-storey commercial buildings on Okhla Road in Central Zone that had come up on a piece of land allotted to a charitable trust. Amity Law School, which was functioning from one of the buildings, was also sealed.

The MCD sealing squad reached Okhla Road and started sealing illegal shops on the stretch. When they reached two six-storey buildings, they found that the piece of land on which the buildings had come up was allotted to a charitable trust by the Delhi Development Authority for running an institute for mentally challenged children.

"Instead of opening an institute for mentally challenged children, the trust constructed two separate six-storey buildings. One building was rented out to Amity Law School, which has been functioning for the past four years, while the other -- MCT House -- was rented out to various private firms. A restaurant was also operating from the building. Both buildings were sealed by the squad for violation of building by-laws and illegal commercial activities," said an MCD spokesperson. Eight other properties were also sealed on Okhla Road.

The MCD also sealed 76 illegal commercial premises between Rawata Marg and Daurala Village in Najafgarh Zone.
