Staff Correspondent

1,172 cases booked against offenders, says Deputy Commissioner

CAUGHT IN THE ACT: A two-wheeler rider being fined for violating the traffic regulations in Hubli on Thursday.

HUBLI: With the "National Road Safety Week" being observed in the district, the Hubli-Dharwad Police have intensified the drive against vehicle owners violating traffic regulations.

On Thursday the traffic police led by senior officials stopped several people, including many women, who were seen violating the regulations.

The police caught hold of motorcyclists and two-wheelers that had parked their vehicles in no parking zones, jumped traffic signals and were seen riding their vehicles in an erratic manner without least concern for the others.

Helmet rule

Many two-wheelers were penalised for violating the helmet rule. It may be recalled that the Hubli-Dharwad Police Commissionerate had organised a series of programmes on creating awareness on road safety.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime and Traffic) R. Dileep said as many as 1,172 cases were booked against offenders and a fine of Rs. 1,80,400 was collected from them here on Thursday.

He said the objective of the drive was to sensitise the vehicle owners to road safety. Programmes for creating awareness would continue and surprise checks would also be conducted, he added.

According to statistics given by the police department, from January 1 to December 31, 2006, a fine of Rs. 92,28,800 has been collected from the vehicle owners violating traffic regulations. And of this a fine of Rs. 33,08,600 has been collected from vehicle owners for drunken driving, riding without protective headgear and over-speeding.

Scant regard

The twin cities are one of such places in the State where vehicle owners have scant regard for traffic regulations and are seen violating them at their will.
