HERITAGE: The KTDC-owned Bolghatty Palace Hotel in Kochi.
KOCHI: The demand for Kerala Tourism Development Corporation-run hotels, resorts and boats is very high this tourist season, with the result that most of its properties are packed with guests. KTDC Chairman Cherian Philip says that this year, the Corporation is gunning for the highest operational profit during its entire history. "The 20 per cent increase in tourist arrivals this season has added to our prospects. Rooms were packed to capacity in Tea County, Munnar, during the Neelakurinji season. Similar is the case with other hotels and resorts. The room occupancy in some of our hotels which were recently reopened after remaining closed for years, has exceeded expectations." Taking note of the role played by marketing, the Corporation has revived its marketing department. More professionals are being recruited. The KTDC has also been participating in international travel marts and road shows. It has embarked on an endeavour to provide better service and facilities for guests, aimed at debunking the perception that service is below par in some of its hotels. The agency recruited 105 trainees during the past few months and they are being put to intensive training. "Our aim is to improve professionalism on all counts. Regular staff meetings are being held to ensure that things are proper, from bathrooms to kitchens. Punching machines have been installed in our properties. Trade unions have pledged all support for the revival proposals and there is mutual respect between the management and employees. A wage revision was carried out recently. In a few years, the KTDC will become a model organisation," Mr. Philip says. New ventures are likely in the Malabar area, considering the increasing demand for rooms in places like Wayanad. The Corporation has sent a proposal to the Government to purchase new tourist boats, since its boat clubs are unable to cater to increasing demand. Better quality brochures are being supplied through KTDC's tourist-reception centres. There is an increase in online reservation, he says. The Corporation-owned Bolghatty Palace Hotel in Kochi is set to get a shot in the arm with the Corporation planning to set up the country's first marina on the land near the heritage structure.
