Book on early childhood education

Staff Reporter

It guides pre-school teachers to impart a holistic education to children

CHENNAI : The first few years of education play a crucial role in a child's life and development. Tamil Nadu Forces, a voluntary organisation, has recently brought out a book that guides pre-school teachers to impart a holistic education to children.

Based on the curriculum framed by the National Council for Education and Research Training, the book on `An Early Childhood Curriculum for the Young Child' (3-5 years) insists on the activity and play-based curriculum for a holistic growth. The book encouraged the teachers to adopt a curriculum that would enable the child adjust to the classroom environment. The book suggested other dimensions to be followed by teachers such as health, classroom language and working with parents.

The burden of formal education such as tests and textbooks must be avoided. It recommended worksheets and games for finger control and eye-hand co-ordination for pre-school children.

K. Shanmugavelayutham, convener of TN Forces, said that the book, brought out by Childhood Education Core Committee of the organisation, also suggested a thematic approach to the total learning experience of a child. For details about the book priced at Rs.20, contact Mr. Shanmugavelayuthan at 23631126 or 28175659.
