Troops to fight gangs

RIO DE JANEIRO: An elite police force will be deployed to fight gang violence across Rio de Janeiro, said the state governor. The force, meant to restore order after a wave of drug gang attacks last week left 19 persons dead, will first be deployed along Rio de Janeiro state's borders to keep out weapons, drugs and criminals, officials said. But on Thursday, armed robbers attacked a van carrying German and Croatian tourists from international airport to hotels in the city's beach district. The assailants stole money, passports and jewellery and fled without hurting any of the tourists.
