Fighting may escalate in Sri Lanka

B. Muralidhar Reddy

COLOMBO: At least two soldiers and an LTTE cadre were killed on Thursday in the north and east even as the air force bombed suspected Tiger targets for the third consecutive day.

The incidents are a clear sign that the fighting might escalate as the military gears up to oust the Tigers from their last bastion in Vaharai.

A military statement said the LTTE outposts in Alampil in the northern Mullaittivu district had been attacked. Air force spokesman Ajantha Silva said the raids had destroyed a Sea Tiger base. There was no word from the Tigers on the aerial bombing.

Batticaloa district pro-LTTE Tamil National Alliance (TNA) parliamentarian S. Jeyanandamoorthy has urged Ban Ki-moon, U.N. Secretary-General, to prevail upon Colombo to declare a safe-haven in the army-besieged Vaharai region. Civilians need protection from artillery, multi-barrel rocket attacks and aerial bombardment. He sought "maximum U.N. intervention" in this regard. He said the international community cannot abandon the Tamils as a people.

A team of Scotland Yard has arrived here to assist in the investigation into the murder of TNA MP N. Raviraj here in November. Led by a detective Chief Inspector of the British Police, the five-member team comprises two forensic experts and two senior police officers, a British High Commission spokesman said.

He said the team was here on the invitation of the Government. Soon after Raviraj's murder, President Mahinda Rajapaksa announced he would ensure an independent investigation into it.
