Copyright dispute

BEIJING: A Chinese court has ruled in favour of well-known painter Chen Kezhi in a copyright lawsuit, the first of its kind in China, in which Mr. Chen was accused of plagiarism by fellow artist Gao Xiaohua. Mr. Gao accused Mr. Chen of copying his artistic technique in his work ``The Big Bombardment of Chongqing 1938-1943,'' according to the court. In 2003, the two submitted proposals to the Three Gorges Museum in Chongqing for a painting about the five-year bombardment of the city by Japanese troops during the World War II. Mr. Gao's painting ranked top in the first round of bidding but, in the second, Mr. Chen produced a painting that was ``almost the same'' as his work, said Mr. Gao. Mr. Chen said he had completed the painting before the first round but chose not to reveal it until the final round. The court said though the two paintings had adopted a similar angle, the ``handling of artistic details'' differed.
