Russian engineer dies in accident

KORAPUT : At least one Russian aeronautical engineer was killed andnine other Russian engineers were injured when a bus in which they were returning from Puri after New Year party plunged into a 20-foot deep coulee near Rayagada town on Thursday morning.

The deceased engineer has been identified as Korlio Victor

The condition of two other Russian engineers was stated to be critical and injured persons were rushed to Hindustan Aeronautical Limited (HAL) Hospital at Sunabeda.

Police said the mini-bus had overturned as the driver could not see properly due to low visibility.

A group of over 30 Russian engineers and other staff had gone to Puri and were returning to HAL's combat aircraft manufacturing unit at Sunabeda.

Four Indian support staffers were also injured in the accident.

Condoling the death, HAL general manager J. K. Mahapatra said Korlio's body would be sent to Russia as per the wish of his wife who was also there during the time of accident.

After post-mortem, the body would be taken to Visakhapatnam by road and from there it would be sent to Russia via Kolkata, he said.

Rayagada district collector Bhaskar Jyoti Sarma and sub-collector Sasibhusan Padhy monitored the situation at Rayagada.
