Drive against anti-social elements will be intensified, says IG

Staff Reporter

Police stations asked to update list by January 15

PUDUCHERRY: The police will intensify the drive against anti-social elements in the wake of a spurt in crimes, according to Inspector General of Police Kishan Kumar.

Police stations had been asked to update the list by January 15 and to launch an "intensified drive" against the anti-socials, he said at a press conference, in which he announced the arrest of seven habitual offenders and seizure of arms and explosives from them.

"I have told my men to chase them. They have to be either on the run or in the jail," he said. The police had gathered evidence that the gangs in Puducherry had established links with the gangs in Tamil Nadu.

"If we don't put an end to the gangs now, it would create serious law and order situation in the future," he noted.

A seven-member gang was arrested and had been booked under several sections of Indian Penal Code and the Arms Act. Seven long knives and ammunition powder used for making explosives were among the things seized from them, Mr. Kishan Kumar said.

The accused persons came into contact when they were lodged in Puducherry prison for different offences and formed a gang, he added. Their arrest came following the ruckus they created in Mudaliarpet on the eve of the New Year. They attempted to kill Desingu and hurled country bombs in front of his house.

The police chief said the leader of the gang, Anandan, was at large and a team had been formed to nab him.

Earlier talking to The Hindu , he said the police still stood by its to the stand that Goondas Act should be brought in Puducherry.

"It would help us to go after them. Without which we have to wait till they commit an offence. However, even without the Act, the police can curtail their activities," he said and added, "we have evolved a strategy to tackle them". When asked about the lack of constabulary in police stations, he said a decision had been taken to use the service of newly recruited Home Guards and men from the IRB for patrolling.

At present the strength of constables was 10 in each of the 41 police stations in Puducherry.

While the Home Guards would be utilised for station works, the services of the IRB men would be used for night patrolling in residential areas, he added.
