TIRUCHI: As part of the 18th Road Safety Week celebrations, an awareness programme for school students on road rules was conducted at the Children's Traffic Park in the Collectorate premises here on Thursday.

About 75 students from K.A.P. Viswanatham Higher Secondary School attended the programme, organised by the Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation (TNSTC), Tiruchi region.

Inaugurating the programme, the Collector, Ashish Vachhani, stressed the importance of road safety. Driving inspectors enlightened the students on the rules to be followed, pedestrian safety and nuances of safe driving at busy traffic junctions.

Pamphlets distributed

Pamphlets with messages on speed limits and safety rules for four-wheelers were distributed.

A drivers' handbook on regulations to obtain driving licence, road rules and traffic laws will also be distributed to the public as part of the celebrations.

The programme aims at covering most of the primary and higher secondary schools in the city and the traffic personnel will conduct a 30-minute programme on traffic regulations for each school.

Mobile exhibition

A mobile exhibition on traffic rules was thrown open to the public by the Collector.

Carrying the `do's and don'ts on the road and pictorial explanations of sign boards, the exhibition is expected to cover as many schools as possible in the city within this week.

The General Manager, TNSTC, Tiruchi region, S. Singaram, and senior transport corporation officials participated.

The campaign will also witness painting and oratorical competitions at schools.
