Sabotage suspected in damage to dam

CHENNAI: Public Works Minister Durai Murugan on Thursday said he suspected that the damage caused to the parapet of the Mullaperiyar dam was due to sabotage.

It would not have happened without the knowledge of the Kerala police. Tamil Nadu would bring the matter to the knowledge of the Supreme Court in the next hearing. — Special Correspondent

Fire in yarn godown

ERODE: Fire broke out at a yarn godown on Park Road in the small hours of Thursday. Though no loss of life was reported, goods worth Rs. 5 lakh were damaged, according to Fire and Rescue Services Department estimates.

The rescue personnel said they received a call around 1.40 a.m. and immediately despatched three fire tenders to the spot. The fire was doused by 9 a.m. — Staff Reporter

Picketing by farmers

DINDIGUL: Approximately 300 people, including farmers, picketed Sirumalai-Dindigul Road on Sirumalai hills, protesting against notices served recently by Department of Forests to remove encroachments in reserve forests. Revenue officials rushed to the spot and convinced farmers to call off the agitation. — Staff Reporter

Cauvery bulk

water scheme

RAMANATHAPURAM: Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi will lay the foundation stone for the Rs. 616-crore Cauvery bulk water scheme, according to K.S. Muthuswaamy, Collector.

Speaking to reporters here on Thursday, Mr. Muthuswaamy said the function would be held at Paramakudi on January 30.

He said tender had been finalised for construction of two collection wells at Mukkombu in Tiruchi district at an estimated cost of Rs. 23 crore. As per the Tamil Nadu Water Drainage Board plan, 57 sumps would be constructed at various places of Ramanathapuram, Sivaganga and Pudukottai districts. The project would be completed within 2009.— Staff Reporter

TNPSC application forms for VAO posts

CHENNAI: The application forms for the examination to be conducted by the Tamil Nadu Public Services Commission for the post of Village Administrative Officer are available in 92 head post offices all over the State. They can be obtained on payment of Rs. 30 a form. The fee for the examination can also be paid in the HPOs, according to an official release issued on Wednesday. — Special Correspondent

Voice chat service launched

CHENNAI: Mobile service provider Airtel on Wednesday launched "Airtel Voice Chat" value added service. Describing it as a first of its kind service in Tamil Nadu, an Airtel press release said voice chat promised to bring a paradigm shift in socialising, mobile interaction and community value added services. "Voice chat is a well researched and an easy to use service." Under the service, the users get a virtual mobile identity thereby keeping them anonymous. Apart from the login/logout and search, voice chat also provided the users options to block IDs creating nuisance. The facility would be made available to post-paid and pre-paid subscribers of for a monthly fee of Rs.15, and per minute charge of Rs. 3. — Special Correspondent

BJP seeks new broad gauge line

PUDUKOTTAI: The Pudukottai district unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party has urged the Southern Railways to initiate steps to provide a broad gauge link between Pudukottai and Thanjavur.

In a statement here on Thursday, the party's district co-ordinator, V. Ravichandran, said that the broad-gauge line should be laid via Perungalur and Adanakottai. At least a bi-weekly service should be introduced between the northern part of the country to Rameswaram.

Mass contact programme

PUDUKOTTAI: The mass contact programme of the Collector, S.J. Chiru, scheduled for January 10 at Parambur village in Iluppur taluk, has been rescheduled for January 9 at 11 a.m. Similarly the mass contact programme of the District Revenue Officer, A. Tamilmani, scheduled for January 10 at Palavarasan village in Avudaiyarkoil taluk will also be held on January 9 at 11.30 a.m., a press release here said.

Job aspirants throng post office

TIRUCHI: Tense moments prevailed for sometime near the head post office here on Thursday when the police used mild force to disperse a group of persons who squatted on the road blocking traffic. They resorted to protest after learning that all application forms for the post of village administrative officer had been sold out. The forms are being sold through post offices across the State. Agrotex exhibition at Komarapalayam

ERODE: SSM College of Engineering and its Entrepreneurship Development Cell are conducting an agricultural exhibition, the inauguration of which will take place at Komarapalayam on Friday.

Minister for Agriculture Veerapandi S. Arumugam will inaugurate the event. Former Minister for Handlooms and Textiles, N.K.K. Periasamy, and Vice-Chancellor, Tamil Nadu Agriculture University, C Ramasamy, will also participate.

TNEB grievances meeting

ERODE: The consumer grievances redressal forum of the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board, Erode, will meet on January 8 at the office of the Superintending Engineering at 948, EVN Road at 11 a.m., a press release said.

Grievances other than those related to unauthorised use of electricity, theft of electricity, theft of electric cables and materials, punishment for receiving stolen property, interference with meters or works of licensee, negligent waste of electricity and damage to streetlamps will be taken for redressal.

The release adds that consumers in Erode, Nasiyanur, Perundurai, Kunnathur, Chennimalai, Uttukuli, Kanjikovil, Kavindapady, Chithode, Sivagiri, Ezhumathur, Kodumudi, Kangeyam, Muthur and Vellakoil may represent their grievances. Country bombs seized

Tuticorin : The police seized two country bombs from near the SIPCOT Industrial Estate here on Thursday.

According to the police, the bombs were seized following information given by two persons who were arrested here on Wednesday, in connection with a murder that took place near Thalamuthu Nagar on December 27. The police are investigating.

Hunt on for two persons

Tuticorin : The police are on the lookout for Subramanian and Rajesh on a charge of murdering Ravichandran (39) at Tiruchendur.

Ravichandran, who sustained injuries in the attack, died at a private hospital in Tirunelveli on Thursday.

Pirated VCDs seized

Tuticorin : The police seized pirated audio and video compact discs, a computer and two CD writers from a shop at Arumuganeri near here on Thursday.

Jesuraj (28), a salesman, was arrested, while the shop owner, Senthurpandian (45), is at large. Official sources said a team of sleuths attached to Video Piracy Cell, led by the Inspector, Nagasankaran, raided the place based on information and seized 3,000 audio CDs, 1,000 VCDs and 1,000 DVDs from there. — Staff Reporter
