Panel to submit report on common syllabus next month

Neglect of Plus-One by schools will be detrimental to students: Minister

TIRUCHI: The Committee on Common Syllabus for Schools will submit its report in February, School Education Minister Thangam Thenarasu said here on Thursday.

The committee has looked into how parity could be reached between the State and Matriculation and Anglo-Indian boards in terms of curriculum, teaching and examination pattern without compromising on the quality of education. The idea is to ensure that students study only what they are supposed to learn for a particular standard, and simultaneously improve delivery mechanisms through activity-based learning in Government schools, Mr. Thennarasu told The Hindu .

The Tamil Nadu Text Book Society, he said, was comfortably placed to print books for all the schools in time. In case of need the task would be offloaded to private printers.

Recognition

To a query, the Minister said the idea of according State-level recognition to Plus-Two top performers who had taken subjects other than Tamil as the first language would be considered. There was no question of discrimination though performers with Tamil as the first language alone would be entitled to incentives as a matter of policy.

In the absence of a Common Entrance Test, the invigilation system for public examinations would be made foolproof. In addition to the tasks of the regular flying squads, representatives of Anna University would monitor the conduct of examinations at each centre. Recognition of centres where malpractices were reported would be withdrawn.

The Ministry was considering proposals for making vital the performance of students at the Plus-One level too for admissions to professional courses. Neglect of Plus-One by schools would be detrimental to students. The modalities were at the discussion stage and the system would be in place from the next academic year.
