Court seeks report from pollution control board

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: The Madras High Court has asked the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board (TNPCB) to file a detailed report on the compliance of the court's order directing about 520 tanneries and dyeing units in and around Erode to install reverse osmosis and reject management system by December 31, 2006.

A Division Bench comprising Justices P. Sathasivam and N. Paul Vasanthakumar gave the direction after owners of the industrial units sought six more months' time for installing the treatment plants. "Before considering the grievances of the petitioners, we are inclined to hear the TNPCB, which shall submit a detailed report on the compliance of our earlier order (dated July 12, 2006)."

The Bench adjourned the matter to January 12, 2007 for further proceedings.

While granting six months time in July last, the Bench had made it clear that no more time would be granted at any cost. The first order directing the units to install RO plants was issued on February 15, 2005. They were granted time till August 31, 2005 by a subsequent order. It was later extended up to June 30, 2006 and then up to December 31, 2006.

In the July 2006 order, the Bench had said if the units failed to comply with the pollution norms by the due date, they would be liable to pay compensation "by way of costs per day to the TNPCB."
