Kalamandalam awards announced

Kalarathnam Award for Moozhikkulam Kochukuttan Chakiar


THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Renowned Kathakali artiste and winner of the Central and State Sangeeta Nataka Akademi awards Kottakkal Sivaraman has been selected for the Kerala Kalamandalam Fellowship for 2005.

Announcing this at a press conference here on Thursday, Kalamandalam Chairman O.N.V. Kurup said the Fellowship carried a cash prize of Rs.10,000, a citation and a plaque.

He said Moozhikkulam Kochukuttan Chakiar was selected for the Kalarathnam Award for his outstanding contributions as a performer and art researcher. The award instituted in memory of Mattamballil Narayana Menon carried a cash prize of Rs.10,000 and a citation.

The other Kalamandalam awards winners are: Kalamandalam Kuttan (Kathakali acting), Kuroor Cheriya Vasudevan Namboodiri (Kathakali music), Kalamandalam K.P. Chandrika (dance), Ayankudi Thankappan Nair (Ottanthullal) and Venu G (Koodiyattom).


The awards carry a cash prize of Rs.5,000, a citation and a plaque each.

P.G. Janardanan's book `Natyakala: Sidhanthavum Prayogavum' has been selected for the award for the best Kathakali-related book. The award carries a cash prize of Rs.5,000, a citation and a plaque.

Kudamaloor Muralikrishnan has been selected for the Bhagavathar Kunjunni Thampuran Award given to the outstanding Kathakali dancer under the age of 40. Kathakali dancer Margi Vijaya Kumar has been selected for the V.S. Sharma Award. Both these endowments carry a cash prize of Rs.2,000 and a citation each.

Clifford R. Jones from the U.S. who has done serious studies in Kathakali, Koodiyattom and Mohiniyattom and who has been a close associate of Kalamandalam since 1959 has been selected for the Mukundaraja Endowment Award, which carries citation and a plaque.

Prof. Kurup said the Kalamandalam also decided to honour the artistes Kalamandalam Subramanian (music), Varkala Srinivasan (Kathakali make-up), Thripunithura Vijayabhanu (dance) and Kalamandalam Rema, Guruvayur (dance) for their outstanding contributions.

The Kalamandalam vice-chairman A.S.N. Nambeesan, secretary N.R. Gramaprakash and the expert committee member Kalamandalam Gopi were also present at the press conference.
