Karunakaran criticises Achuthanandan

Says decision on ADB loan cannot be taken without Chief Minister's knowledge

Thiruvananthapuram: Nationalist Congress Party leader K. Karunakaran has said that Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan cannot wriggle out of the ADB loan controversy by stating that he did not see the relevant files and by putting the blame on officials.

Addressing a press conference here on Thursday, the veteran leader said the Chief Minister must disclose what happened in the ADB loan issue. He blamed Mr. Achuthanandan for the "Government's non-functioning," dashing the hopes of the people who had returned the LDF to power with a strong majority. The Ministry had lost its collective responsibility, he said.

Asked whether the Chief Minister was playing petty factional politics using his status, Mr. Karunakaran said that it had nothing to with factional politics. "Mr. Achuthanandan is talking nonsense," he said. The Chief Minister and his Ministers were washing dirty linen in public, diverting the public attention from key issues.

On issues as important as the ADB loan, no decision could be taken without the knowledge of the Chief Minister, the Minister concerned and the Cabinet, he said.

He also made fun of the reported decision of the CPI(M) central committee referring the ADB issue back to the party's State leadership.

The Government was indulging in issuing mere statements without coming up with constructive solutions for settling the Mullaperiyar issue, he said.

He parried questions on the SNC Lavalin controversy. "Officials usually do not take policy decisions," he said when a reporter persisted with the Lavalin issue.
