DYFI to launch campaign against communalism, casteism

  • Plan to widen membership base of DYFI
  • Calls for reforms in the education sector

KANNUR: The Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) will launch various programmes to uphold social renaissance values in an effort to fight against retrograde trends emerging in the State.

Briefing the proceedings at the delegates' session of the State conference of the DYFI here on Thursday, DYFI State president P. Sreeramakrishnan and secretary A. Pradeepkumar said the DYFI would aggressively intervene in issues that called for protection of renaissance values. DYFI workers would not only uphold those values in their personal lives, they would also launch aggressive campaigns against casteism, communalism and superstitions that were gaining acceptance in society, the leaders said.

Mr. Sreeramakrishnan and Mr. Pradeepkumar said the conference also wanted the organisation to widen the membership base of the DYFI to include all humanitarian and secular minded youth in the organisation. They said though the DYFI was an independent youth organisation, majority of its 46 lakh members in the State were Left-oriented youths. The DYFI's struggles and agitations over the last few years had been generally appreciated by the delegates at the conference, they said.

Referring to the judgment of the High Court on the Kerala Professional College Act, the DYFI leaders said the organisation would strengthen its agitation against `anti-people' verdicts of courts. Such agitations were for strengthening the credibility of the courts, they said adding that court verdicts should not be above the legislature.

To a question, they said the DYFI expected good performance from the Left Democratic Front (LDF) Government.

A resolution adopted by the conference urged the Government to introduce far-sighted reforms in the education sector and mobilise people against communal and commercial interests in the sector.

Another resolution urged the Government to formulate alternative policies for creating employment opportunities.

The conference also called on the Government to introduce a new sports policy to strengthen the sports potential of the State.

The conference will conclude on Friday with a rally to be addressed by CPI(M) State secretary Pinarayi Vijayan. New office-bearers of the organisation will be elected on the last day of the meet.
