AISF alleges commercialisation of education State flayed for not enhancing scholarship amount for BCs and mess charges

FIERY PROTEST: AISF activists staging a demonstration in Kurnool on Thursday.

Kurnool: AISF activists staged a demonstration to protest against the proposed Private Universities Bill. The protesters burnt the effigy of Higher Education Minster accusing him of paving the way for commercialisation of higher education. AISF district secretary Lenin said the Knowledge Commission set up by the Government recommended for 1,500 universities across the country to meet the needs of the country. Also, the panel suggested increasing budgetary allocation for education. The private universities would deprive the poor and weaker sections of an opportunity to pursue higher education.

Mr. Lenin alleged that the Government which was delaying to establish a university at Kurnool, which was the former capital of Andhra State, was eager to pass the Private Universities Bill. The AISF leaders said students were seriously inconvenienced by lack of scholarships and financial support from the Government.

Inter fee hike opposed

Kadapa Staff Reporter adds: AISF activists picketed the office of the Regional Joint Director of Education here on Thursday demanding the Government to withdraw the move to hike Intermediate fee by 10 per cent in the next academic year.

Criticising the Government's proposal, AISF district president K. Mallikarjuna Reddy and secretary N. Venkatasiva alleged that the Government had failed to enhance scholarship amount for BCs and mess charges for seven years. The hike would burden students, they said and added that poor students were giving up studies unable to pay the fee.
