AIIES meet: competitions in 21 disciplines

HYDERABAD: For almost six decades, the All India Industrial Exhibition Society has been organising sports and games between January 1 and February 15. In this year's edition, competitions will be held in 21 disciplines, each in memory of a departed office bearer.

At a press conference jointly addressed on Wednesday by the society's vice-president Jairam Singh, convenor, Sports and Games V. Sainath Dayakar Shastri, Secretary Anil Swaroop Mishra, Treasurer Ashwin Margam and the Andhra Pradesh Olympic Association Secretary, L. Venkatram Reddy, the organisers said that due to paucity of space within the Exhibition Grounds, most events would be held at the Victory Play Ground, the Railway Recreation Club (RRC) ground and the YMCA.

The indoor competitions will be held at the society's premises.

The Associations conducting the various disciplines will intimate the venues and dates of competitions shortly.

The events (dedication in brackets):

Basketball (Abbas Hyder), kho-kho (A. Vidyadhar), kabaddi (Bhagwan Singh), table tennis (B. Papaiah), tennikoit (Dayakar Sastry), badminton (L. N. Gupta), volleyball (Mahenderji), gymnastics (Mazhar Hussain), cycling (B. Jaysena), M. Narsing Rao, sepak takraw (Rameshchandra Lahoti), archery (B. Raghuveeraiah), roller-skating (J. Mallesham), korfball (M.A. Jabbar Farooqui), handball (Romesh Ketkar), netball (B. Babu Shanker), judo (Mohd. Mohiuddin Jeelani), athletics (M. Mohan Reddy), taekwondo (K.S. Reddy) and fencing (S.M. Amjad Ali Khan).

Hyderabad triumphs

Hyderabad Division emerged overall champion in the 12th SCR inter-district athletic meet for railway schools and railway junior colleges, which concluded at Vijayawada on Thursday. Divisional Railway Manager S.K.Sharma gave away the prizes.

Important results: Junior boys: 100m: 1. Sai Kumar (Hyd), 2. Bala Kranthi Raju (Hyd), 3. . Vergheese (Nanded); High Jump: 1. P.N. Sai Kumar (Hyd), 2. K. Arun Kumar (Vij), 3. Naveen Kumar (Guntakal). 3000m: 1. P. Madhu Babu (Hyd), 2. B. Anil Kumar (Hyd), 3. P. Sudhir (Sec'bad); Shot put: 1. A. Prabhakar (Vij), 2. B. Ravi (Sec'bad), 3. Sai Kumar (Hyd); 400m: 1. K Sai Kumar (Hyd), 2. R Girish Kumar (Vij), 3. Murali Krishna (Guntakal).

Junior girls: 100m: 1. Nazmunisa (Hyd), 2. M Sujatha (Vij), 3. P.J. Glory (Hyd); Relay: 4x 400m: 1. Hyderabad, 2. Vijayawada, 3. Guntakal.

Major Ports' hockey from today

The Visakhapatnam Port Sports Council will organise the 28th all-India Major Ports' hockey championship and the 27th badminton championship at the Nehru Place Sports and Cultural Complex at Visakhapatnam from January 5 to 7.
