Ranadeb Bose wrecks Hyderabad

Principal Correspondent

HYDERABAD: It was Bengal's day, thanks to an exceptional performance by fast bowler Ranadeb Bose (seven for 25) whose unchanged spell of 20 overs spelt doom for Hyderabad.

The host, who took a 109-run first-innings lead, was skittled out for a paltry 76 in its second outing on the third day of the four-day Ranji Trophy Super League Group `B' cricket match at the Rajiv Gandhi Stadium (Uppal) here on Thursday.

Chasing a victory target of 186, Bengal was sitting pretty at 72 for two at close of play.

Bengal was bowled out for 200 in the morning session after medium-pacer Alfred Absolom bagged his maiden five-wicket haul in Ranji Trophy. The onus was then on the Hyderabad batsmen to put up a healthy score and force an outright win.

Excellent bowling

But that was not to be as Ranadeb bowled his heart out and generated pace and bounce while maintaining an accurate off-stump line. Every batsman struggled and the way he sent back opener T. Suman and D. Vinay Kumar with deliveries which swung back sharply to castle the stumps, was a treat to watch.

Arjun Yadav was lured into fiddling with an away-going delivery to be caught behind by Deep Dasgupta. The suicidal run-out by skipper Anirudh Singh after a terrible mix-up with opener T. Suman was the last thing Hyderabad wanted. That Kaushik Reddy could not thrive even after three dropped chances was also a tribute to the efficacy of Ranadeb Bose who never gave any freedom to the batsmen.

Umpiring

The umpiring continued to be questionable. R.Y. Deshmukh consulted his square-leg colleague Ranade before turning down a vociferous lbw appeal from medium-pacer M.P. Arjun against opener Arindam Das when the latter looked to be plumb in front. He even lost count of the number of balls once and had to refer to the scorer to continue proceedings.

Despite Arjun's aggressive and accurate spell, in which he sent back Arindam Das — brilliantly caught by wicketkeeper Ibrahim Khaleel diving to his right — and A.P. Chakraborty, lbw, the other bowlers failed to sustain the pressure.

Consequently, thanks to some sensible batting by A. Jhunjhunwala and Manoj Tiwary, Bengal was comfortably placed at 72 for two at close.
