`Accident-free' RTC drivers felicitated

  • `Drivers responsible for only 10 per cent of accidents'
  • `Drastic fall in accident compensation paid by RTC'

HYDERABAD: RTC Chairman Gone Prakash Rao has asserted that corporation drivers can be faulted only for 10 per cent of accidents. And in the remaining 90 per cent, he blames the other road user for the accident. He was speaking at a function to felicitate drivers with accident-free track record at the APSRTC here on Wednesday. He stressed the need for motivation and continuous training for safe driving.

Principal Secretary, Transport, A.K. Tigidi expressed happiness that the corporation had registered a profit of Rs. 147 crores till December-end. However, credit must go to drivers and conductors, the public face of the corporation for they went to the rural areas everyday.

There was a drastic fall in the compensation paid by the corporation in accidents — from Rs. 36 crores to Rs. 18 crores — in the last financial year, according to V. Dinesh Reddy, Vice-Chairman and Managing Director. He said while the corporation's drivers were known for their discipline on the roads, there was always room for improvement.

    Privatisation

Regional Chairman K. Sanjiva Reddy sought to dispel fears of privatisation in employees' minds by saying that new measures introduced were aimed at developing the corporation.

Those who got the award for being first in the seven zones were: Inder Singh of Dilsukhnagar depot of Hyderabad zone, D. Jaffar Saheb (Anantapur, Kadapa zone), M.K. Reddy (Chittoor-I, Nellore), G.S. Rao (Gokavaram, Vizianagaram), K. David (Guntur-II, Vijayawada), T.S. Ramulu (Hyderabad-II, Hyderabad) and M.Z. Ali (Banswada, Karimnagar).
