The fun way to learn

Exhibition an instant hit with students

CUTTACK: Teaching in classroom alone is not sufficient and students should be exposed to innovative methods of learning.

DAV Public School at Sector-6 in Abhinav Bidanasi did exactly that on Wednesday.

More than 2,000 students turned teachers and explained over 500 lessons from subjects like science, mathematics, social studies, computers, art & craft, English, Oriya and Hindi at an exhibition held on their campus.

The lessons were not only exciting but also thought provoking. Students actually explained the topics to over 5,000 parents who turned up as visitors.

Planned cities

While one group of students believed that aliens, inhabitants from outer space, would land on earth any day by February this year, another group was sure that the cloudburst and landslips in Himachal Pradesh would be arrested by massive afforestation. There were a few students who wondered why modern cities of the country could not be planned properly like Harappa or Mohanjedaro that were planned over 5,000 years ago.

Krishna Gopal Mohapatra and some of his friends of Class IX were excited over the fact that the aliens would land on earth very soon. "We go by the results of research made by several scientists in the field," the boys said in unison.

"Scientists are constantly getting replies from aliens of outer space to their messages from the earth. A famous scientist Ja Bhal Elaam has even got a reply from aliens that they will be landing on earth any day between November 15, 2006, and February 2007," Krishna Gopal explained while exhibiting a self-prepared project on the subject.

Ankit Das in the physics section described how an electronic eye with hidden alarm works in Naveen Niwas, the house of Orissa Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik. Similarly, Anubhav and his friends of Class VI explained the city planning of Mahanjedaro and Harappa about 5,000 years ago in the social science section. Earlier, regional director of DAV institutions H.K. Mohanty inaugurated the exhibition and talent hunt competition for students. School principal B.N. Singh was also present.
