Good day for Indian boys

CHENNAI: Ramit Tandon, Ravi Dixit and Aditya Jagtap moved into the pre-quarterfinal round in the under-15 category of the British junior squash open being held in Sheffield.

Ramit came up with his best performance so far to defeat Malaysia's Cheong Kah Wah 6-9, 9-7, 1-9, 9-3, 9-1 in a match lasting 65 minutes.

This victory must have been particularly sweet for the 14-year-old Indian who had lost to Cheong in straight games last week in Scotland and at the Asian junior individual championship in June last year.

Joining Ramit in the round of 16 were Ravi and Aditya who made short work of England's Robert Downer 9-4, 9-1, 9-2 and Arbab Dilawar of Pakistan 9-5, 9-1, 9-6 respectively.

Cyril Kuhn also had a fine win in the boys' under-17 section, beating Omar Magdy Ghanem 7-9, 9-5, 9-2, 7-9, 9-7.

It was, however, a disappointing day for Dipika Pallikal who lost to Japan's Misaki Kobayashi after being two games up. The Japanese won 4-9, 4-9, 10-8, 9-1, 9-1 in the round of 16.

The girls' under-13 matches commence on Friday and five Indians will figure in them.
