NELLORE: In what seems to be a major setback to the State, US-based Mozo Footwear company is likely to ignore Nellore district to set up its footwear unit and prefer Ranipet of Tamil Nadu. Representatives of the company a few months ago visited the district to explore opportunities. But the firm now appears to have evinced interest in Tamil Nadu with the neighbouring State offering better incentives and tax sops, according to a senior official here. Reputed sports brand Nike, too, had decided to establish its unit near Chennai, the official noted. However, providing a major relief to the State, the Tata group has decided to set up the leather-based industry at Rs. 600 crores in the district. It will provide technical support to a consortium of leather industries at Mambattu. Meanwhile, the much-publicised international leather park at Krishnapatnam, which has got green signal from the Centre, may be delayed further due to bottlenecks in transfer of lands. District officials fear that there are chances of shifting the proposed park to another location to another Statewith Genco failing to transfer land to LIDCAP.
