ON THE BEAT: Union Minister of State for Commerce Jairam Ramesh explaining a point to Deborah Kellner, a photo journalist from National Geographic, at Jainoor in Adilabad on Thursday.
SIRPUR (ADILABAD DT.): Union Minister of State for Commerce Jairam Ramesh has observed that IIT at Basar is not going to serve the cause of the backward region. Talking to reporters on the sidelines of visit to Jainoor and Sirpur (U) mandals on Thursday, the Minister said because of the all-India level intake of students in such a premier institute, locals hardly stood a chance of benefiting from it. Allaying the fears of Telangana remaining backward because of denial of IIT to Basar, he said: "In any case it is still in Telangana (he meant Medak)." Interacting with Deborah Kellner, a photo journalist from National Geographic, he said that organic farming, especially in the case of cotton, would not suit Indian farmer. The scribe was in Jainoor to make a feature on organic cotton farming. Quoting the example of Warangal district where 80 per cent of cotton farmers had opted for Bt cotton, he said farmers need high-yielding crops.
Ideal spot: Ramaiah
NIZAMABAD: Keeping up the tempo, educationist Chukka Ramaiah said the IIT if set up at Basar could be developed keeping in view the interest of rural economy. Basar was an ideal location for the IIT as it would help in developing the backward regions, he said while addressing a meeting of students, people's organisations and political parties here. He expressed surprise at the Chief Minister's decision to establish the IIT in Medak district.
