Yediyurappa launches Jana Shree scheme

Gulbarga: Karnataka became the first State in the country to launch an insurance scheme for sheep and sheep rearers living below the poverty line (BPL).

Deputy Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa launched the Jana Shree scheme here on Thursday. The Government will spend Rs. 5 crore on it.

"This is one of the schemes we are launching to promote sheep rearing in a big way," he said. According to the 2003 animal census, there were 72.55 lakh sheep in the State.

Of them, 8.11 lakh sheep belong to BPL families. The scheme intended to cover these families and their animals, he said.

The Government would complete 39 of the long-pending irrigation projects in the State, Irrigation Minister K.S. Eshwarappa said. Agriculture Marketing Minister Sharanabasappa Darshanapur and MLA Chandrashekar Patil Revur spoke.

Animal Husbandry Minister and KSWDC president Revu Nayak Belamagi, MLAs, MLCs, and officials were present.
