University to set up complaint centre

Shastry V. Mallady

To redress grievances of distance education stream students

MADURAI: The Madurai Kamaraj University is setting up a complaint centre on its campus to exclusively deal with grievances of students under the distance education stream with a `human touch.'

The new cell will have a dedicated telephone line and staff members who would personally attend to all the complaints with regard to mark sheets, degree/diploma certificates and admission/study materials.

With the total candidates on roll crossing 1.4 lakh mark in the Directorate of Distance Education (DDE), the varsity felt it necessary to have a separate mechanism by which candidates from anywhere in the country could call up and get their grievances redressed.

"We will ensure that the requirements of students are looked into with swiftness. Also, the university should be in a position to call up the candidates and brief them about the action taken," P. Maruthamuthu, Vice-Chancellor, told The Hindu on Thursday.

Stock reply

According to varsity officials, right now there is a situation wherein students find it difficult to know the status of their compliant and on several occasions they have to make several phone calls only to get the stock reply: `send your details again.'

Though there is a grievance centre in existence now, it has not been effective enough to deal with the growing number of admissions, officials felt and added that in the last three months the rush was so huge that the staff in DDE were caught unawares.

The Director of Distance Education, S. Vadivelu, said the special telephone would be made available in the next few days and it would be intimated to the candidates through admission centres.

Complaints of missing Demand Drafts (DDs) would also be handled sincerely, he said.
