BELLARY: Speakers at the meeting of the District Congress Committee held here on Thursday stressed the need for unity among leaders, fielding good candidates in the local body elections and working for the party's victory. This was the first meeting convened by Mr. Abdul Wahab, after assuming charge as DCC president to organize the party in view of the elections to the local-self governments. Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee general secretary Ugrappa was the observer at the meeting. Speakers pointed out that no development, worth mentioning, had been taking place in the district after the Janata Dal (Secular)-Bharatiya Janata Party coalition came to power. Mr. Wahab, in his opening remarks, recalled the support the party enjoyed in the district. But this got eroded in the 2004 general elections. He urged the party workers to remain united and regain the lost ground. The former KPCC president, Allum Veerbhadrappa, said that the Congressmen were at a loss to understand the reasons for the defeat of the party in the last elections. The former DCC president and former MLA Shiraj Sheikh said that the youth should be given more preference while distributing the party ticket. K.C. Kondaiah, MLC and former MP, said, "all leaders should take keen interest in organising and strengthening the party by going to the grass-roots level and win the elections," he said. Bhagirathi Marulasiddanagowda, MLA, wanted the leaders to ensure unity and lead the party to victory. The former Minister, M. Diwakar Babu, wanted the party leaders to eschew egoism. Venakata Rao Ghorpade, former president of zilla panchayat, wanted the leaders to send the right signals to the party workers. M. Shankar Reddy, Nandihalli Halappa, both former MLAs, spoke.
