Leaders should not only promise, but also deliver, says Yediyurappa

Gulbarga: Sincere attempts by local leaders would lead to the development of any region. Leaders should not keep on making promises, but they should also implement them, Deputy Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa said in Gulbarga on Thursday.

He was speaking at the Hyderabad Karnataka awareness rally organised by the Kottala Basaveshwara Bharatiya Shikshana Samiti and its Hyderabad-Karnataka development wing.

He said that the D.M. Nanjundappa Committee had recognised that 21 of the 39 most backward taluks in the State were in Hyderabad-Karnataka region.

"We will make sincere efforts to develop them in the next 30 months," he said.

A sum of Rs. 2,350 crore was disbursed as crop loans at four per cent interest, he said. The Deputy Chief Minister felt that scientific price fixing for agro produce would improve the lot of farmers.

The prices of agro commodities should be fixed at the time of sowing, the Deputy Chief Minister said.

He also felt that timely payment of crop insurance compensation would remedy the situation to a great extent. The Government was seriously considering providing agro inputs like seeds, fertilizers and pesticides to farmers at the appropriate time, he said.

Around a lakh unemployed youth would be given apprenticeship training in various industries. This would lead to job creation and economic development, he said.

The Government was willing to forgo Rs. 2,000 crore of excise revenue in order to make people give up the habit of drinking.

The Government was considering laying dedicated power lines to supply power to irrigation pumpsets, he said. It would also encourage industries to come up in places other than Bangalore, he said.

Union Minister of State for Planning M.V. Rajasekharan said the M.S. Swaminathan Commission report on agriculture development would be discussed at the National Development Council meeting in February, the Minister said.

Tourism Minister B. Sriramulu; Sedam MLA Sharanaprakash Patil; Indian Council of Agriculture Research Director S.A. Patil; Azadi Bachao Andolan's Rajiv Dikshit; organic farming campaigner Narayan Reddy; Swadeshi Jagaran Vedike's B.M. Kumar Swamy, rally reception committee chairman P.K. Jain, the former MP Basavaraj Patil Sedam and Veterinary University Vice-Chancellor R.N. Srinivas Gowda were present.
