Special Correspondent

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Union Government has sanctioned a Rs.77-crore scheme for command area development and water management of the Kallada Irrigation Project.

The scheme will facilitate irrigation in 53,514 hectares in Kollam, Pathanamthitta and Alappuzha districts.

The restructured Command Area Development and Water Management Project of the Union Government, under which the assistance is being received, gives emphasis on supply planning, construction of field channels and drives, solving of water-logging and renovation of tanks.

Minister's plea

Minister for Water Resources N.K. Premachandran had earlier represented to the Union Minister for Water Resources Saifuddin Soz for special consideration for the Kallada project.

The Minister said the scheme would be carried out on a time-bound basis throughout the command area of the Project.

Offices and staff required for the work would be set up soon.
