TIRUCHI: The stage is all set for the resumption of passenger train services on the broad gauge section between Tiruchi and Pudukottai from tomorrow after more than a year. The railway authorities have organised a function in the morning at the Pudukottai railway station, where the Union Minister of State for Railways, R. Velu, will flag off the services. The Union Minister of State for Home Affairs, S. Regupathy, will also be present. The 53 km Tiruchi - Pudukottai BG line was recently certified fit for operating passenger train services by the Commissioner of Railway Safety, Pranab Kumar Sen. The conversion work between Tiruchi and Pudukottai was taken up as part of the Tiruchi - Manamadurai BG project for which a sum of Rs. 187.81 crore was sanctioned in 2002. The second phase of work from Pudukottai to Karaikudi has commenced. Two pairs of passenger trains will be operated in the section from January 6 onwards. Train No. 831 will leave Tiruchi at 6 a.m. and arrive Pudukottai at 7.20 a.m. In the return direction, Train No. 830 will leave Pudukottai at 7.40 a.m. and arrive Tiruchi at 9 a.m. In the evening hours, Train No. 829 will leave Tiruchi at 6 p.m. and reach Pudukottai at 7.20 p.m., while Train No. 832 will leave Pudukottai at 7.40 p.m. and arrive Tiruchi at 9 p.m. The above trains will stop at Kumaramangalam, Tondaimanallur, Keeranur, Narthamalai and Vellanur stations, sources said. A press release from the Southern Railway here said that one pair of train services would be operated only on January 5 after the inaugural special. These trains will leave Tiruchi at 6 p.m. and Pudukottai at 7.40 p.m.
