KOTTAYAM: The Kottayam Revenue District Schools Youth Festival formally got under way here on Thursday with a colourful cultural pageantry. The procession commenced from Holy Family Girl's High School to the main venue at Mount Carmel Girl's Higher Secondary School. The festival was declared open by K. Suresh Kurup, MP. V.N. Vasavan, MLA, presided over the function. District panchayat president K.P. Sugunan delivered the keynote address. The first prize for the best presentation in the cultural pageantry for high school section was bagged by Mount Carmel School. The second and third positions were bagged by St Josephs HSS and Baker Memorial GHSS. Literary competitions and competitions in band music were completed on Wednesday itself. More than 3,000 students from 13 educational sub-districts are competing in the nearly 250 events being held on eight venues. Balakalolsavaom, Sanskritolsavom, Arabic Sahityolsavom and TTI-PPTTI Kalolsavom are being held along with the schools festival. Curtains will come down on the festival on Saturday evening. Leader of the Opposition Oommen Chandy will inaugurate the valedictory function. Municipal chairperson Reeba Varkey will preside. District Collector Raju Naryana Swamy will distribute prizes.
