Junior college staff launch mid-day meals

Timely food for the poor students will help improve success rate, opine teachers

KARIMNAGAR: In order to increase the pass percentage in Intermediate examinations, faculty members of Government Junior College (Science wing), Karimnagar town with the coordination of local philanthropists have launched the mid-day meals programme for poor students of junior college from Thursday onwards.

Contribution

Junior College Principal G. Sujatha said that the faculty members had contributed for the launching of mid-day meal scheme for the poor college students to improve the pass percentage in the college since 2004.

She said that they were providing food to about 300 students everyday.

These poor students who come from various parts of the district do not get their lunch boxes because of poverty and most of the time they go home after lunch hours.

With the mid-day meal scheme, the students were remaining in their classes till late in the evening and the study hours had increased considerably, she added.

The launching of mid-day meals had helped increase the pass percentage from 13 per cent in 2003 Intermediate examinations to 41 per cent in 2006.

Donation

She said that they were planning to further improve the Intermediate pass percentage in the college during this year.

She said that initially the faculty members alone had shared the expenditure, but now the local philanthropists had also come forward for the noble cause.

Local corporator M Ashok Rao, rice miller Prabhakar Rao, Chalimeda Ananda Rao medical college Director Suryanarayana Reddy and others have contributed their mite for the successful implementation of mid-day meals to college students.
