Defence staff oppose privatisation policy
Special Correspondent
CHENNAI:
The All India Defence Employees' Federation (AIDEF) has urged the Centre to withdraw its policy on allowing private participation in research, production and maintenance in the Defence sector. It has also opposed the move to allow 26 per cent of foreign direct investment in Defence. General secretary of the AIDEF C. Srikumar on Thursday said in a statement here that a resolution adopted by the delegates' session of the federation's 22nd national convention on December 30 also appealed to the Centre to drop its decision to grant Raksha Udyog Ratna status to private companies, which were given licence for defence production. The federation through another resolution, called for lifting the ban on recruitment. It also demanded steps to fill over one lakh posts lying vacant in Defence establishments.
The AIDEF demanded removal of "illogical conditions" imposed by the Government for granting appointment to wards of the deceased employees on compassionate grounds.
The convention elected a new executive committee of 51 members with S.N. Pathak as president, A.B. Bardhan of the All India Trade Union Congress, Dipankar Mukherjee of the Centre of Indian Trade Unions and Umraomal Purohit of the Hind Mazdoor Sabha as vice-presidents. Saila Bhattacharya and C. Srikumar were elected as general secretaries and J.D. Suryawanshi as treasurer.
