BHUBANESWAR: Blind Association of Orissa (BAO) has decided to urge the University Grants Commission to establish a Disability Study Department in Berhampur University for research and documentation of disability issues. "The proposed department will have state-of-the-art training facility for visually challenged persons. There is no such facility in nine universities of the State. We will request UGC to consider our proposal favourably," Sanyasi Behera, BAO Office Secretary, said. He said the department would undertake study possible opportunities of higher studies for the visually challenged persons and employment scopes in the state. The BAO organised the 198th birth anniversary of Louis Braille and its 32nd annual function here on Thursday. The association gave tape recorders to five visually challenged students (three from Utkal Sangeet Natak Mahavidyalaya and two from BJB Autonomous College) as there was no provision of Braille education, Mr. Behera said. The specially manufactured tape recorders were developed by Centre for Rehabilitation Service and Research, Bhadrak.
Plea to bus owners
The BAO also demanded execution of guidelines that extended free travel in buses. "We have appealed to the Private Bus Owners' Association to issue a circular among all the bus operators to make it happen," he said. According to BAO estimate, Orissa has around five lakh population of visually challenged persons. President of Private Bus Owners' Association Debabrata Patnaik and former Joint Secretary of Orissa Legislative Assembly Debendra Nath Pradhan and Assistant Director of Indira Gandhi National Open University (Orissa Circle) Santosh Kumar Panigrahi attended the celebration.
