Police bust ghee racket

Staff Reporter

Two persons arrested in raid

  • Ingredients worth Rs. 30 lakhs seized
  • Product being packed in fake pouches of reputed brands

BERHAMPUR: A mixture of some butter, vansapati and `sujee' may be the adulterated `pure ghee' that one may buy as a product of any reputed brand.

On Wednesday night, the Berhampur police raided a unit manufacturing adulterated `pure ghee' near the Gate Bazaar area.

Ingredients worth Rs. 30 lakhs used in the making of the adulterated product was seized and two persons were arrested.

The adulterated `pure ghee' was being packed in fake pouches and tins of reputed brands and marketed throughout the State.

A large quantity of fake labels, pouches and tins of reputed brands was also seized.

    The mixture

According to Berhampur Superintendent of Police Dayal Gangwar, when the team raided the unit, manufacturing of adulterated `pure ghee' was on in two cauldrons, which was to be packed in the forged pouches and tins.

The adulterers surely use some amount of pure ghee to manufacture the adulterated mixture. They heat up some pure ghee of any reputed brand and mix double its quantity of cheap vanspati to it.

    Chemical essence

They then add `sujee' to the mixture to provide the look of pure ghee and some chemical essence so that even foodies would not be able to detect the adulteration.

To bring the brownish colour, the mixture would either be heated for a long time or some colouring agent added.

In the past, similar raids in the city revealed that adulteration units manufacturing consumable items like hair oil, biscuits existed.

Mr. Gangwar said the intelligence wing was keeping a watch to unearth more such goods.
