`Passion and the Other'

ABSTRACT: A work by Rajesh Kumar Shukla

A weeklong solo show of Delhi-based artist and art critic Rajesh Kumar Shukla titled "Passion and the Other" is now on at the Academy of Fine Arts and Literature at 4/6 Siri Fort Institutional Area in the Capital.

Speaking about his ongoing exhibition, Rajesh says: "This is my first solo show as an artist. I have used vibrant, dominating colours in my abstract paintings. While painting I never think about the structure of painting; it is like a sacred ceremony to me."

Stating that each painting has been made with a heart that is restless, thirsty and hungry, Rajesh says a majority of reds and yellows used by him are symbols of passion and longing.

Painting for the past four years, Rajesh has only recently started participating in art shows. In fact, some of his paintings are in several private collections. He was awarded the Lalit Kala Akademi scholarship in 2004-2005 for art criticism. At the inauguration of the exhibition on Monday, Rajesh's fifth book titled "Hindu Tantra Yoga" was released by Madhu Khanna, who is director of Tantra Foundation, Delhi.

Other books penned by Rajesh include "Contemporising Buddha", "Concerning the Spiritual in Art" and "Kala Ka Swaran Muhurat". Besides writing extensively on art, philosophy and spiritualism, he has also worked as a columnist for a Hindi daily.

The exhibition will end this coming Sunday. -- Madhur Tankha
