BJP plans 1,000 meetings

Launches campaign against UPA Government at Centre

CHENNAI: The State unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party has launched a campaign to highlight the issues of rising price of essential commodities and "politics of appeasement" practised by the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) Government at the Centre.

It will hold 1,000 meetings to explain to the people the "achievements" of the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance regime and contrast them with the UPA regime's performance, president of the State unit of the party L. Ganesan told newspersons here on Thursday.

Former Union Minister and national president M. Venkaiah Naidu would address a meeting in Tiruchi on Sunday.

On January 13, Murli Manohar Joshi would participate in an event in Chennai. National president Rajnath Singh and Leader of the Opposition L.K. Advani had been requested to visit the State.

On the Mullaperiyar dam issue, Mr. Ganesan said it would be better to entrust with the Union Government the operation and maintenance. "When parties espousing the cause of State autonomy had demanded deployment of Central forces, there was nothing to feel surprised about a national party leader making a case for handing over the dam site to the Centre."

On the killing of the Hindu Munnani's Tenkasi town president Kumarapandian recently, Mr Ganesan said the Government should arrest all those who were responsible for the incident.
