High-tension wires causing concern

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: Delhi Bharatiya Janata Party general secretary Karan Singh Tanwar has accused the Delhi Government of failure to take action against complaints of high-tension electric wires passing over a residential area in Naraina Cantonment here that have become a cause for concern.

In a letter to Union Power Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde, the BJP leader pointed out that many people living in the area had lost their lives after getting electrocuted by the 33,000-volt high-tension wires passing over the area. Mr. Tanwar accused the State Government of being irresponsible and indifferent toward the people and said that both Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit and Power Minister Haroon Yusuf had failed to address the issue despite numerous petitions and reminders.

The BJP leader cited an incident that took place on December 6 when a 45-year-old woman, Suman, lost her life after getting electrocuted while she was attending to chores on the terrace of her house. He said recurrence of such incidents in the area had left the residents angry and afraid. Pointing out that the wires were old and weak, he said residents live under the constant threat of a portion of the wire falling off.
