De-addiction centre for Tihar

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: A new 120-bed drug de-addiction centre was inaugurated by Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit at Tihar Central Jail here on Thursday.

The centre, constructed at a cost of Rs.1.76 crores in the Jail Hospital premises, will enable the prison administration to provide uniform de-addiction treatment to all drug addicts under one roof. It will also help in treatment of inmates suffering from other diseases.

Since the centre has provision of a pathological lab and psychiatric and counselling facilities, there are plans to shift all drug addicts, lodged in various jails, to this building so that their treatment is effectively monitored.

Ms. Dikshit said jails in Delhi had earned the distinction of being qualitative reform centres that provide opportunities of a positive change in the attitude to inmates and feel transformed, trained and reformed upon their release. The Delhi Government, she said, had been developing model jails in Delhi that are the best not only in India but even in Asia.

Since 8 to 10 per cent of Delhi's population comprises drug addicts, every newly admitted prisoner in the jail is medically examined on the very first day of his admission to identify his medical status so that prisoners having a history of drug addiction or suffering from serious ailments are identified and their treatment starts from the very first day.

Persons identified as drug addicts are segregated from the others and treatment plans for them include drug detoxification and rehabilitation therapies.
