Thanjavur: Understanding the content and objective of his kritis will be the right tribute to saint composer Sri Thyagaraja, according to Andhra Pradesh Governor Rameshwar Thakur. In his speech, which was read out by his Secretary M.G. Gopal at the 160th Aradhana of saint composer Sri Thyagaraja, which began at Thiruvaiyaru in Thanjavur district on Thursday, the Governor said musicians should know the meaning of the kritis instead of singing it for melody and music. Mahatma Gandhi described Thyagaraja as a great instrument of national integration, the Governor said. This is true because Thyagaraja rendered his kritis in Telugu, which are sung by Tamil musicians and patronised by Keralites. Thyagaraja used music for worshipping Lord Rama. His kritis are known for their spiritual thought and universal message. He sang thousands of kritis but only 700 of them are available. They are in 200 ragas out of which 100 are the saint's innovations. Mr. Rameshwar Thakur, who was to inaugurate the festival, could not attend the function owing to some unavoidable circumstances. Collector C. Vijayaraj Kumar, who inaugurated the festival, said the objective of kritis of Thyagaraja was bhakthi. They also contained human values. G.K.Vasan, Union Minister of State for Statistics and Programme Implementation; G.R. Moopanar, president of Sri Thyagabrahma Mahotsava Sabha; and violin maestro Kunndakudi Vaidyanathan; and Haridwaramangalam A.K.Palanivel, secretaries of the sabha, participated. Music concerts followed the inauguration.
