Call to improve safety in industries

  • "Safety standards in industries should be improved"
  • Fireworks safety campaign cell in found effective

CHENNAI: A plan is being prepared by the State Government to make the youth employable in various sectors, Labour and Employment Secretary Ramesh Kumar Khanna said on Thursday.

Participating in a specialised training programme on "Safety in automotive industries," organised here by the State Government and the National Safety Council, he asked the automotive industries to specify their skill requirements to help the Government give specialised training to the youth.

To upgrade the skills of students, the Government had revised the syllabus in the industrial training institutes. Besides creating job opportunity, the State Government was giving doles to the unemployed youth.

Stressing the need for improving safety in industries, Mr. Khanna said training should incorporate three major aspects: safety, health and environment.

The Department had started a fireworks safety campaign cell in Virudhunagar. It was found effective. Similar campaigns for other industries would be started in other areas.

    Welfare assistance

The Secretary said that in the last six months, the Government had distributed welfare assistance to the tune of Rs 14.9 crore to 62,000 unorganised workers covered by various welfare boards. For construction workers alone, Rs 5.9 crore had been disbursed. He said there were 13 welfare boards in the State, of which 12 were set up in the last six months.

    Proper training

Labour Minister T.M. Anbarasan, whose presidential speech was read out in his absence, said proper training and education of workers in safety would lead to zero accident in industries.

K.A. Mohamed Aziz, Chief Inspector of Factories, who explained the purpose of the training, said the specialised safety training to workers had become necessary as Tamil Nadu had become an automobile hub.
