City police celebrations conjure up memories

Retired cops honoured, film released and exhibition held

CHENNAI : The 150th year celebration of the Chennai Metropolitan Police, which was inaugurated by Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi on Thursday was one which brought back memories of the past on the occasion.

An impressive parade by policemen, a section of whom donned the uniform of the past, more conspicuous being khaki half-trousers, and honouring of a retired Police Commissioner, a constable, a sub-inspector and a personal assistant formed the highlights of the event.

The Chief Minister released a short film on the city police, which was screened on the occasion.

The producer, Abirami Ramanathan, presented the film to the Chief Minister who, in turn, gave it to Police Commissioner Letika Saran.

Those honoured by the Chief Minister were K. R. Shenoy, who once served as Police Commissioner, L.Natarajan, a retired personal assistant, K. Narasimhalu who retired as a Sub-Inspector in 1978 and M. Murugesan, a retired constable.

Exhibition

The exhibition arranged in a portion of the stadium highlighted the strides and developments the city police had made in the last 150 years.

Mr. Karunanidhi also released a souvenir whose first copy was received by the Director-General of Police, D. Mukherjee.

The Chennai Metropolitan Police at present had 12 police districts, three zones and a traffic wing, headed by a Joint Commissioner of Police. At present, the Commissionerate's jurisdiction was over 894 sq.km with a population of nearly one crore.

Among those who participated in the function were retired Directors-General and Inspectors-General of Police.
