: About 40 per cent of the construction work of a grade separator at the busy Padi junction has been completed. Estimated to cost about Rs. 60 crore, the work is to be completed by April. However, a spokesman of the National Highways Authority of India, executing agency, says the work will be over only by December 2007, as "it involved a number of complex operations." One of the reasons cited for the revised deadline is delay in land acquisition. Two issues require to be attended to urgently, according to the persons involved.
To commence work on the side of Villivakkam, the present railway level crossing has to be closed and two make-shift crossings have to be formed. The NHAI is awaiting the approval of Railways in this regard. The Authority has started forming approach roads for the make-shift crossings. Besides, land acquisition has to be completed on the Villivakkam side. Compensation has been awarded and it is for the landowners to accept it and hand over the required land, the spokesman adds.
