Power theft detected

CHENNAI
: Officials of the central enforcement squad, Chennai Enforcement Division, Tamil Nadu Electricity Board (TNEB), conducted a surprise check in a plastic industry at Pulianthope and found that the unit allegedly indulged in theft of energy by "direct tapping" and the consumption was not recorded in the meter.
According to a release, the check was conducted on December 28 last year and provisional assessment of loss to the Board was Rs 2,87,962. This is being collected in instalments. Also the consumer came forward to compound the case in lieu of criminal proceedings and remitted a sum of Rs 65,000. Hence no complaint was lodged with the police. Information regarding energy theft may be given to Executive Engineer/Enforcement, Chennai, at 94440-85459, the note concluded.
