HYDERABAD: Thieves took away a cash chest weighing 150 kg with Rs. 3 lakhs inside it after breaking open the shutter of a building near NFCL Rotary in Punjagutta on Wednesday night. The burglary, unheard of in the city's recent crime history, was committed at a stone's throw away from the Punjagutta police station, left the police and people surprised. According to the complainant, Ajay Kumar Reddy, 28, who runs a foreign currency exchange office on the second floor of a private building, there were 7,000 currency notes of different denominations and countries inside the chest. The building had two watchmen. While one slept near the gate, the other slept on the first floor. Neither of them could give any clue about the crime saying they were fast asleep after midnight. "Surprisingly, there are no scratches anywhere on the building though Reddy maintains the 2.5 feet wide and 4 feet high Godrej company chest was taken away," Punjagutta ACP L.K. Shinde said on Thursday. Police suspect the offenders climbed up an adjacent complex and from there jumped on to the currency exchange office building. It is believed that the thieves used an autorickshaw with a trolley for transporting the chest.
