Thiruvananthapuram: Minister for Water Resources N.K. Premachandran has expressed unhappiness at the unhealthy competitions witnessed in youth festivals.

He was inaugurating the 10th State Higher Secondary Youth Festival at St. Mary's School here on Thursday.

Youth festivals should be venues for discovering new talents and trends in the field of arts, he said. He said many persons were acting against the spirit of the festivals. A section of the students was finding it difficult to participate in them because of the heavy expenditure involved. If remedial measures were not taken, this would lead to serious problems. It was unfortunate that such discrimination was taking place in the education sector, which should be the starting point of social justice, he said.

He said the participation of all sections of students should be ensured. He expressed hope that the initial problems would be overcome and everyone would cooperate in organising the festival in a scientific and foolproof manner. Mayor C. Jayan Babu; Deputy Mayor Jayaprakash; MLA V. Sivankutty; Higher Secondary Education director V. Karthikeyan Nair; and St. Mary's School Principal Fr. George Mathew participated in the inaugural function, which was preceded by a colourful pageant. As many as 3,500 students from across the State are participating in the festival, which will come to an end on Saturday.
