Child dies allegedly during demolition

NEW DELHI: A 10-day-old child died allegedly after coming under the debris during a demolition operation at Shankar Garden in West Delhi on Wednesday night. However, the police denied having come across any evidence indicating that the death was caused during demolition.

According to Indu Shekhar of Ashraya Adhikar Abhiyan, Pooja, a resident of the Shankar Garden slum cluster, had pleaded with the demolition team to allow her to take her child out of her hutment late on Wednesday evening but was not allowed to do so. The child, who was wrapped in a quilt, was discovered dead once the demolition got over. He added that the demolition began around 4 p.m. and continued up to midnight against all norms.

However, the police claimed that they were informed about the death only around noon on Thursday. "We are verifying the claims and have sent the body for post-mortem," said Deputy Commissioner of Police (West) Robin Hibu.

He said that the police were present at the site to provide security to the demolition team of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi.

Man threatens suicide over Saddam hanging

NEW DELHI: A 30-year-old man climbed an electric pole and threatened to commit suicide at Gandhi Nagar in East Delhi on Thursday in protest against the execution of former Iraqi President Saddam Hussein.

Mohammad Chand was later arrested and a case under Section 309 (attempt to commit suicide) was registered against him.

According to the police, Chand, a resident of Zaffrabad, climbed up the electric pole near Shastri Park Metro railway station at 10 a.m. He was protesting against the execution of Saddam Hussein and seeking immediate release of his cousins and aides lodged in jails there, the police said.

Chand claimed that he was president of the Seelampur unit of the Samajwadi Party and demanded that the External Affairs Ministry condemn the hanging of Saddam Hussein.

However, the police succeeded in persuading him to climb down the electric pole around 5 p.m. and then arrested him.

Clear sky after days of fog

NEW DELHI: After days of blinding fog, the city was greeted by clear skies on Thursday. Though the temperature was a degree lower than normal, the absence of fog spelt relief for commuters as air and rail traffic were back on track with no diversions and cancellations.

The Meteorological Department said the minimum temperature was 6.3 degrees Celsius, which was one degree below the normal. North-westerly winds were responsible for blowing away the fog, the Met official said.

Visibility in the Capital was recorded at 1,500 m and the maximum temperature recorded during the past 24 hours was 19.4 degree Celsius. With the runway visibility improving, flight operations were resumed at the domestic and international airports. The runway visibility was recorded at 3,000 metres.
