dated January 6, 1957: Nehru and the Congress

An informal meeting of delegates to the Congress session at Lakshmibai Nagar (Indore) on January 5 was marked by a clash of opinion between the Congress President, Mr. U.N. Dhebar, and Mr. Mahavir Tyagi, Minister for Defence Organisation, on the true extent of Mr. Nehru's personality as a contributory factor for the popularity of the party. Mr. Tyagi said the Congress was really weak and it was because of their love for Mr. Nehru that the people cast their votes in favour of the party. Mr. Dhebar contested this evaluation and said the roots of the Congress lay much deeper than was imagined by Mr. Tyagi. The organisation was built on unquestionably strong foundations. The people also were intelligent enough to know where their real interests lay. It was no doubt true that Mr. Nehru's personal popularity was an important factor, but the strength of the party was by no means negligible. Mr. Nehru was all the while quietly listening to this conflicting estimation of his personality.
