This Day That Age
Mr. B. Gopala Reddi, Home Minister of Andhra Pradesh, said in Bombay on January 5 that music was a harmonising force and it knew no language controversies. Mr. Gopala Reddi, who was inaugurating the music festival organised by the Shamukhananda Fine Arts and Sangeetha Sabha, referred to the spirit of renaissance pervading the country after the advent of Independence, and said a country was not judged merely by its material prosperity. Literature, music, sculpture and fine arts, which had been handed down to them through generations, had a remarkable influence in shaping their personality, and the manner in which they practised and encouraged these arts was an indication of their progress. Mr. Gopala Reddi stressed the need for North Indians studying and learning South Indian languages, literature and music. The South must be familiar with everything pertaining to the North likewise. Pointing out that Bharatanatyam recitals had become popular in North India, he expressed the hope that soon South Indian music would forge ahead and get appreciative audiences even in North India.
