`Traffic Week' is being observed in the city and in the important towns in the districts of Salem and Namakkal with the usual fanfare this year too. The objective is to create awareness among the public about traffic rules and regulations. Collectorate, Regional Transport Offices, police and Rescue and Fire Service have been asked to coordinate the event. Apart from organising seminars, workshops, exhibitions, sensitisation camps for drivers, enforcements drives, distribution of handbills etc, the thrust of the event is `catch them young.' The victims of road accidents are mostly in the age group of 18 to 25. Hence is the need to create awareness on traffic rules and imbibe a sense of responsibility in the younger minds. Many schools and colleges have organised various programmes on road safety. Exhibitions on fire safety and road safety have also been organised. Police and transport officers, who are well-versed in this sphere of activity, have attended the programmes. Vidhya Nikethan Matriculation Higher Secondary School at Rasipuram organised a special session on traffic awareness, as a part of the week's celebrations in Namakkal district. Nearly 90 per cent of fatal road accidents occur either due to negligent driving or breaking of rules. Signal jumping, driving on the wrong side, haphazard parking and blocking roads by going abreast in twos and threes can be noticed on Salem roads. With Salem Corporation remaining a passive spectator, many shopping complexes have converted their parking slots into commercial areas thus forcing vehicle owners to park on road margins. There is a growing demand from among the public to declare at least Saradha College Road and Omalur Main Road as `Strict traffic regulation zones' on experimental basis to study blatant traffic violations and suggest remedies.
